Set on Chicago’s South Side, the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generation of the Younger family:son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena, called Mama. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighorhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans, however: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school.

About the Author
Lorraine Hansberry, at twenty-nine, became the youngest American, the fifth woman, and the first black playwright to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for the Best Play of the Year. Her A Raisin in the Sun has Since been. published and produced in some 30 countries, while her film adaptation was nominated by the New York Critics for the Best Screenplay and received a Cannes Film Festival Award. At thirty -four, during the run of her second play, The sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, Lorraine Hansberry died of cancer. In ths years since her death, her stature has continued to grow. To be young, Gifted and Black, a dramatic portrait of the playwright in her own words, was the longest- running off – Broadway dramaof 1969, and has been recorded, filmed, and published in expanded book form, and has toured an unprecedented forty states and two hundred colleges.
In 1986, following the stages production of the 25th anniversary of A Raisin in the Sun by the Roundabout Theatre in New York City, the play was widely acclaimed as in the foremost ranks of American classics. In 1990, the PBS American Playhouse TV adaptation of the 25th – anniversary version had one of the highest viewing audiences in PBS history. Les Blancs, her last play- posthumously performed on Broadway and recently in prominent reginoal theaters – has been hailed by a number of Critics as her best.
Small summary about this story
This is an extremely interesting story, When Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun premiered in 1959, it was the first play by a black woman to open on Broadway, as well as the first play with a black director. The tittle comes from Langston Hughes’s poem ” Harlem,” which asks, ” what happens to a dream deferred ? Does it dry up like a Raisin in the Sun?”
The play tells the story of the Youngers, a family who lives together in a small Chicago apartment. The patriach of the family, Walter Younger sr., has died, and his widow and children await a $10,000 Insurance payout. They dream of the ways that the money can improve their lives. Beneatha, Walter’s daughter, wants to go to medical school. Walter’s daughter, Wants to go to medical school Walter Lee jr. hopes to use the money to purchase a liquor store with two of his friends. Lena Yonger, Walter Sr.’s widow ( also know as Mama), puts a down payment on a house in a white neighborhood but allows Walter jr. to manage the rest of the money as long as he saves a substantial amount for Beneatha’s tuition. When the family faces backlash from the so- called “Welcoming Committee” of their new neighborhood and Walter loses all of the remaining money, including Beneatha’s tuition, to a thieving investment partner, the Youngers are Challenged to remain proud and strong in the face of racism and misfortune.
