A Modest Proposal PDF

A Modest Proposal is considered to be the best satire ever written. It is a harsh satire, with a grotesque proposal making the gravity and the hopelessness of the situation of the Irish people crystal clear to anyone who reads it. The famous metaphor, “The English are devouring the Irish”, meant that because of unfair trading practices, too high rent and absentee landlords, the lrish were being starved and slowly destroyed by the English. Swift plays with this metaphor in his essay. I will examine the proposal in this discussion within the context of lirsh histroy and Swift’s attempts to call attention to the lrish situation, demonstrating how effective satire can be as a tool to catch and hold the reader’s attention.

Jonathan Swift is one of the best satirists of English literature. He is considered a national hero in Ireland, even though he was a devout Anglican and despised Catholicism. He did have sympathy for the Irish Catholics, in spite of his feelings about their faith because he was a man of principle, and had a strong sense of right and wrong. He saw the policies and practices of the English government and the Anglo-Irish landlords as being unjust and, indeed, disastrous to Ireland herself. He made several proposals to change the situation, to make Ireland and the Irish people prosper.

Review

“This is obviously an incredible satire,
which hopes to give some satisfaction to the rich. I recently reread it after reading The Sorrow of Young Mike. In John Zelazny’s Parody, the main character parodies Jonathan Swift’s modest proposal. It is a parody within a parody and the modern twist is displayed well.”

– Jonathan Ashleigh

“Having read this several times; it’s the perennial English teacher favorite to demonstrate satire – I have to say that I enjoy it on several levels. First, the writing is fairly lucid and easy for a modern reader to comprehend. Second, the dark humor amuses me. Third, it gave rise to one of my favorite English class essays – a satire in the style of Mr. Swift, in which I argued for the adoption of Twilight as high school literature curriculum. What fun the was to write. The fourth mark in the modest Proposal’s favor is the cunning political statement below the surface – masterfully done”.

Abouth the Author

Irish author, clergyman and satirist Jonathan Swift grew up fatherless. Under the care of his uncle, he received a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and then worked as a statesman’s assistant. Eventually, he became dean of St.Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Most of his writings were published under pseudonyms. He best remembered for his 1726 book Gulliver’s Travels.

Q.1. What is the main purpose of a modest propsal?

The purpose of Swift’s satirical essay is to call attention to the problems that were being experienced by the people of lreland. He wanted the English (who ruled Ireland) to realize what they were doing and to put in place reforms that would solve the problems they had helped to cause.

Summary about this book

This is a very intresting and very effective stroy, This poverty is a very good book written above the starvation. In this book, the old-generation conservative thinking has been written very well. In the opening paragraph of the essay, the author call to mind the image of poor woman and children begging for scarps of food on the streets of Ireland. Neither the mothers nor their children are capable of working and must “employ all of their time” begging for food. The children eventually grow up to be thieves or, barring that, leave for England “to fight for the Pretender“. The author appeals to the personage of England’s general feeling that the poor children are a bad reflection on the country and an addition to it’s list of grievances. He offers that anyone who could find a way to make these children into worthwhile, productive cogs in the societal machine would be doing the country a service.

The author says that he has a solution or an “intention” that would go so far, not only as to remove the beggar children from the streets but also the children of families who have no admitted to themselves that they are too poor to support them yet. The author reports that he has been considering the problem of Ireland’s overpopulation for many years and that the schemes and arguments of other scholars on the subject are not adequate. He details some calculations of his devising. A newborn infant, for instance, can be fully supported for it’s the first year on breast milk and the easily obtained sum of only two shillings…
